Suggestions Through 10/15/15
"does the bulk milk (over by the cereal dispensers) come from cows treated with rBGH, is it organic?"
Our bulk milk comes from Driftwood Dairy in El Monte. The milk comes only from cows not treated with rBST, also known as BGH. It is not organic. We are not able to obtain organic milk in bulk packaging.
Learn about our other suppliers.
"PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GET A CHOCOLATE MILK DISPENSER!"
Like organic we also cannot get bulk milk in chocolate. Unfortunately the choices in bulk milk are limited to whole, low fat and nonfat.
"So y'all had chicken and waffles at the cooler on Saturday, October 3rd. That chicken changed my life. I heard from several other students that they would really love and appreciate having those breaded chicken breasts as an option for sandwiches. I agree with these sentiments wholeheartedly. Please! The breaded chicken for sandwiches! It was perfectly cooked and seasoned. I almost went back for seconds, just for this chicken."
The Tiger Cooler Manager replies "While we would love to take full credit for this life-changing chicken, it is actually a frozen product that we simply had to deep fry. It is a very flavorful product, which is why we like to use it for our specials throughout the school year. Unfortunately, we are limited to only offering it as a special on the weekends because the product requires that we send one of our staff to use the deep fryer at the Marketplace facility. Although we have a 2 vat fryer at the Cooler, high demand for fries, onion rings and mozzarella sticks which accompany grill orders prevents us from cooking meat items in those vats - as we could no longer claim that the oil is vegetarian. But we will try to incorporate it for other specials."
"can a vegetable option be provided during breakfast hours? (sautéed spinach for example)"
We have a variety of vegetable options for breakfast if you think creatively! The grill station carries mushrooms, olives, peppers and onions for omelets already. You may have any of these cooked to order. If you would like a tofu scramble, you may bring a small paper bowl of tofu from the salad bar in the morning to the grill station and we will be happy to make one for you. ALSO did you know that the Cooler makes vegetarian breakfast plates every Monday-Wednesday-Friday morning at 10:30?? Stop by for Soyrizo with Eggs, Breakfast Potatoes, Onions and Peppers.
"LOVE the caramel almond sea salt kind bars! I hope that you keep stocking them :)"
We will keep rotating in the Caramel Almond variety (we love them too!)
"...loved the quinoa lentil loaf for dinner the other day- I hope to see it again! So yummy
That is one of our regular vegan entrees. It rotates in about every two weeks. Glad you like it!
"Would you consider making/selling plain boiled or steamed potatoes or sweet potatoes as a regular thing? Maybe at the Grill station?"
Truth be told, we believe we sell a lot of potatoes already, although we know they are not always plain. However, we'll keep your suggestion in mind. But If you haven't already been here for the week of Passover, you ARE going to love the homestyle station then ;-)
"[Tiger Cooler] When will you start selling rice?"
Hmmm, we never stopped. The Cooler sells rice Monday-Thursday evenings beginning at 7pm. However even with a 60 cup rice cooker and an extra insert we cannot keep up with the demand, so maybe you are coming when we have run out? Never fear, we have a 2nd rice cooker on order!
"What type of mushrooms are used at the sandwich station? What are they marinated in?"
They are Shitaki Mushrooms, marinated in sesame ginger tamari, (gluten free).
"Love the hummus and pita To go! How do you make your hummus?"
The hummus sold in the Tiger Cooler is made in the Markeplace kitchen. The ingredients are canned garbanzo beans, sesame tahini, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil and salt.
"Please bring back the chai tea!"
We're not sure if you are referring to tea bags in the Marketplace, or a product in the Cooler. But we checked all products and everything seems to be in stock as of 10/16. Please let us know if that is not the case.
"more ice cream sandwiches!"
Are you asking for more varieties of Ice Cream Sandwiches, or did we run out? The Cooler has to rotate varieties due to lack of freezer space, so in that case we're guessing the former. The Marketplace carries quite a few types, so we're guessing it might be the latter. The Marketplace is fully stocked up now. Not much we can do about the Cooler, however (until we remodel of course!)
"Thoughts on more paleo-friendly meals? For example, cauliflower mashed "potatoes" or cauliflower crust pizza. Spaghetti squash pasta? It would be so appreciated! And they're super yummy! I think gluten-free individuals would appreciate it as well."
We served Cauliflower Grits at Homestyle on October 6. Did you try them?
Chef Meesh serves up quite a few paleo-friendly meal. We hope you might have tried and enjoyed yesterday's (10/15) Homestyle dinner:
Rosemary Roasted Pork Loin (gf)
or Deviled Cauliflower T-Bone (v)(gf)
with Creamy Spinach Polenta (v or vl)(gf)
and Spicy Charred Cherry Tomatoes (v)(gf)
Coming up on Friday 10/23 at Homestyle for lunch:
Sesame Chicken Wings (gf)
or Sesame Tofu Steaks (v)(gf)
with Lime-Sweet Potatoes (v)(gf)
and Fried Brussel Sprouts (v)(gf)
Be sure to check the menu in advance and find the paleo meals!
We actually tried spaghetti squash as the vegan pasta at the saute station for five full weeks in fall 2013. Unfortunately it did not sell well, we heard from many vegans that they preferred vegan pasta so we eliminated it.
"Can you please put out various flavors of berry bowl in the morning instead of only one flavor at a time? For example, I'll see all york bowls then an hour later all pitaya bowls. Is there a reason the marketplace does this? It would be great to have options especially since those other flavors are in stock."
Berry Bowl is excited about the quantity of bowls we are ordering from them, but they are challenged with producing so many! They deliver sequentially in 2-3 batches, so yes, we receive the flavors sequentially too.
