Suggestions Through 1/31/15
"will there be another opportunity for cooking with joe?"
We are working on a possible Sunday afternoon "Cooking With Joe" this March. Stay tuned!
We heard you, and since we received your suggestion in November we've been working on this. We hope you've seen an improvement and a lower salt content in the refried beans. If you haven't, please write again and let us know.
"First I just want to say that I really appreciate all the hard work that goes into the food services here at Oxy. We have a lot of really great food and a lot of good options. However, I have Celiacs disease and I have a hard time sometimes finding things to eat that are pretty low carb. There's always tons of carb options like pastas, potatoes, and bread things. It would be nice to have more variety within the lower carb selection though. Maybe some cauliflower crust pizza or things made with almond or coconut flower. Thank you again for all the great food!"
Thank you for the kind words! You sound like someone who might benefit from our special dietary services. We suggest you explore one or both of these options:
- Judy Runyon, our associate director, provides information about our gluten free options and special diets: firstname.lastname@example.org
- Nancy Neff is Oxy's consulting registered dietitian. Her counseling services are free to Oxy students. She can be reached at email@example.com
Our Gluten Free guides for the Marketplace and Tiger Cooler are available on the Nutrition Resources page.
"The Chicken or Asian Marinated White Beans (v) in Rice Paper Wrap, Cold Rice Noodles & Tofu Salad (v) Homestyle lunch today was REALLY good, probably one of the best lunches I have had at Oxy (Im a senior) y'all should make that more often."
We agree that the Rice Paper Wraps were a terrific entree, but they turned out to be REALLY labor intensive. If we make them again, it will have to be at a slower time of the year, we couldn't keep up with the pace at Homestyle on a typical day! But we're so happy you liked them.
"The Beef Stroganoff with Papadel noodles is one of the best items at Homestyle."
Thanks for letting us know. This entree doesn't present the same challenges as the one above, and you will see it again :-)
"The squashes stuffed with apples and oats were AMAZING!!!!! I had one at lunch and one at dinner!!!! Thank you!"
Our pleasure - a local, organic, seasonal favorite!
"I would love if there could be regular or original unflavored silk milk!"
The Tiger Cooler carries regular soy milk in single serve packs in the refrigerator along side the bottled milk. The Marketplace also carries regular soy milk in both small and large containers. If we are ever out, please ask a supervisor, cashier or counter person.
"When available, can the low-fat vegan muffin option be labeled like the regular muffins? Thanks, they're delicious!"
We can do that ;-)
Can there be the vanilla creamer from the Marketplace in the Cooler and Coffee Cart? It is delicious and I'd really enjoy access to it at other locations with coffee!
The Marketplace has a bulk dispenser, which (at least at the present time) is not feasible for either the Cooler or Coffee Cart. The little individual containers are not good for the environment and they are costly. We'll keep the bulk dispenser idea in mind for future however, thank you.
"Please please please consider offering matcha lattes at the Cooler and/or coffee cart!"
We are contacting a vendor for samples for the Cooler, so it's a definite maybe!
"Dear Marketplace Team,
Thank you for all the work you are doing, your dedication and food are amazing! I am vegan and would have one suggestion: Could you please bake the vegan muffins more often? They are DELICIOUS but I haven´t seen them lately and really depend on them as my dessert for lunch.
Thank you so much!"
Thank you for the compliments. Your comment came in just after winter break, during which our bakers were taking vacation. We have vegan muffins in stock regularly now. They are baked fresh in the morning and often run out by lunch. Come early!
"How much fat and protein is in the marinated grilled mixed veggies at the Grills station? Also, what kind of sauce are they usually cooked in (it's delicious)?
If you are referring to the stir fry mixed veggies, they are prepared with a medley of five ingredients/sauces; Fermented Black Beans, Hoisin Sauce, Sambal, Minors Stir Fry Sauce and Kikkoman Teriyaki Sauce. The nutritional information can be found here.
"Hi! Could we please have bowls for salads? As a salad lover, I would be willing to pay the same amount as a large plate to have my lettuce stay on my plate! :) Really though, it makes it awkward for students when the cherry tomatoes start rolling, and then suddenly there's a squashed tomato on the floor. As a student, I hate leaving it there for a MP worker to clean up, but there are no napkins in the MP caf area to make moves on the tomato mess. In short: salad bowls please? disclaimer: this does not refer to any tomato incident in reality and is merely a representational scenario of events that may or may not have occurred "
We hear you and we understand. You are welcome to bring a pasta bowl or cereal bowl to the salad bar and use it for your salad. Two caveats: 1) Please do not "hide" anything from another station underneath your salad. This is one of the reasons we do not provide salad bowls - if you hide something and you do not declare that chicken breast, shrimp or other pricey item and we catch you (we have cameras and observant employees) you will be referred to the conduct system and you will not enjoy that. 2) The cashier will determine how much to charge you for your salad, depending on how much you put into the bowl - no appeals, no arguments please.
FYI, the second reason we don't purchase bowls for the salad bar is the cost of the bowls themselves. The plates cost less than the bowls, and the Marketplace loses almost $8,000 a year in serviceware as it is.
"It would be awesome if there were mozzarella and basil (or pesto spread) at the sandwich station! I'd love to make a caprese wrap or sandwich, but it doesn't quite work!"
We carry Pesto Mayo spread at the sandwich station. Our production space there is very limited. If we added mozzarella and basil, two other standard ingredients would have to go. We carry the caprese at the deli salad station quite often, and if we have overstock ingredients, we assemble them into sandwiches for the grab & go.
"It would be really great if there were radishes added to the salad bar. They're on top of one of the salad options but those radishes are usually dried out and they're aren't enough. I think students would really enjoy because it's a great compliment when we have tacos. And radishes are a palette cleanser so they go great with any meal."
We agree with all the good qualities about radishes. We'll try rotating them in and see how they are received. With limited spaces at the salad bar every topping has to "earn" its place by being popular, and many toppings are in demand. Vote with your choices!!
"Hey Marketplace! What is the feasability of creating meals like the ones featured in this buzzfeed article (http://www.buzzfeed.com/mackenziekruvant/21-super-healthy-bowls#.aqadGKYBne) It seems like an easy grab and go for Oxy students without having to sacrifice anything!
Very enticing photos, and the food not only looks healthy, but very much along the lines of Chef Meesh's style. As for "Grab & Go", most of these are hot bowls, suited for the chef's corner or saute station, or cold salads for our deli station. They take a bit of assembling, and each bowl recipe would need to be assessed for feasibility in our kitchen. Thanks for the ideas!
"What is the nutritional analysis of a large hot mocha (soy or coconut milk)?"
We don't have our espresso drinks analyzed (as a self-operated dining service, we don't have an employee or employees dedicated to this task). Since most espresso drinks are fairly generic, we suggest a website for nutritional analysis such as this. Try plugging in "soy mocha"
"I love eating at the Cooler and Marketplace! From the chefs to the cashiers, everyone I interact with is warm and friendly. Special shout-out to the pasta station chefs who made me smile today [1/29]!"
Aww - We can honestly say we love Oxy students, faculty and staff. Happy employees make happy customers, and vice versa!
NOTE TO ALL OUR CUSTOMERS: We received an anonymous inquiry about "food poisoning". Winter is flu season. Not just the respiratory kind, but also plenty of gastro-intestinal illnesses are passed around at this time of year. Many ailments present with the same symptions as food borne illness.
Campus Dining is required to initiate an investigation if two people eat the same product from the same source at or around the same time and become ill. Food borne illness does not typically come on as quickly as most people think - it takes a while for the bacteria to multiply. So while it seems to be associated with what was most recently eaten, it may not be. It is also initially difficult to distinguish it from other gastro-intestinal ailments, which is why it takes two people to initiate an investigation. If you believe you may have an illness related to food, please contact Emmons Health & Wellness Center, or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Tips for staying healthy at this time of year, and all year long:
- Wash your hands frequently
- Get plenty of sleep
- Get your flu shot
- Keep common surfaces clean and disinfected
- Eat well!
