Suggestions Through 2/24/16
"LOVED the mussels!!! When I saw they were being offered, had to be first in line. The quality and taste did not disappoint. Hearty portion, great flavor and cooked perfectly."
"The mussels cooked to order were SO DELICIOUS! Would it be possible to have it more often? Would clams be a more affordable alternative? I imagine that just sauteed shrimp (same shrimp in stir fry) with the garlic, lemon, parsley, chili, butter, etc. would be super delicious and popular--serve it with a scoop or rice/garlic bread. White wine was accompanied with the mussels, but there wasn't a non-alcoholic alternative (even though the alcohol is cooked off). Maybe there can be a fish stock or something similar. That said, they were still very delicious even without the addition of white wine. The mussels give off their own juice. Just once again, thank you for a great lunch!"
The Mussels (2/19) were a HUGE hit at the Saute Station. Clams take 3 times as long to cook, so they are not a viable alternative. Look for Mussels once more before the semester's end.
"Can we try to get vegan ice cream please?"
"Could we start stocking the new non-dairy Ben and Jerry's pints? I do like the dairy-free options we have, but I feel like Ben and Jerry's is something I'd love to try now."
The Ben and Jerry's vegan ice cream has not made it into our supply chain yet. We will monitor our vendors for when and if it shows up. In the meantime, the Marketplace stocks Amy's Vegan Ice Cream in 1/2 pint containers, and the Tiger Cooler carries Rice Dream bars.
"Potential idea for future eco-clamshell system: use student account/meal plan money to purchase/rent one (similarly to the way the greenbean rents out coffee mugs). This would solve the problem I've been hearing a lot lately regarding misplaced tokens! :)
We like the GB's system for the mug check out - but it takes time that would REALLY slow down the lines. All students are enrolled upon arrival at Occidental. If you never picked up your token, now's the time. A replacement token is $5, and may be charged to your meal plan. Visit the Card Office for assistance.
"It would be awesome if the cooler sold soft pretzels :-)))"
Come to the Cooler Saturday evening 2/27!! While we cannot offer Soft Pretzels as part of the regular menu, we will try to have them more often as a weekend special. They have to be heated in our pizza oven, which can only be done when the pizza station is not in use. The reduced menu on Fridays and Saturdays also allows us to dedicate the necessary staff resources to special menu items such as these.
"Vegan tofu scramble as a replacement for eggs for breakfast - possible?? Thanks!"
You may already be aware that we currently off Tofu Scramble on Saturdays and Sundays. For weekdays, please get a small bowl of tofu from the salad bar and take it to the Grill. The cook will be happy to add it to the other ingredients in a dedicated pan. Allow adequate preparation time :-)
"Can we try introducing smoothie bar on a weekday please?
We're sorry, but we don't have sufficient staffing to provide this popular Saturday treat on weekdays.
"Hi, is the oatmeal you serve gluten free?"
Oatmeal by nature is gluten free, however on most gluten free websites it states that people who are sensitive to gluten are often ALSO sensitive to oats. Therefore if you are not oat-sensitive you should be fine with our Oatmeal. It is made of 100% oats and water.
"Would it be possible to make these vegan dinners (I found them on the Oxy nutrition website): Creole Eggplant Eggplant Casserole Moroccan Vegetables Stew With Couscous Okra & Tomato Casserole (!!) Saffron & Spinach Polenta Sauteed Okra & Roma Tomatoes And also this (not from oxy) Imam Bayildi: "http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2015/oct/10/aubergine-recipes-turkish-imam-bayildi-hungkar-begendi-roast-with-tarator-yotam-ottolenghi
The vegan entrees you listed are all from our previous executive chef. We will look into re-issuing some of them into our rotation. The Turkish Eggplant sounds wonderful, thank you :-).
"Do the cranberries for the oatmeal have any added sugar?"
Yes, They are Oceanspray product with added sugar and sunflower oil. We haven't seen Dried Cranberries without sugar before. They are a pretty sour fruit!
"What additives are in the canned chickpeas, kidney beans, and black beans in the salad bar?"
These are canned products. All three of these beans have added water and salt. Chickpeas (Garbanzos) also contain disodium edta. Kidney Beans contain disodium edta, calcium chloride, and sugar. Black Beans contain calcium chloride and ferrous gluconate.
"Would it be possible to stock coconut sugar or pure maple syrup? It doesn't have to be a free condiment - perhaps include it as an oatmeal topping?"
There would be no way for our cashiers to distinguish between the pure and regular syrups. We don't have a supplier for Coconut Sugar. We do offer Agave Syrup at the condiment stand however.
"Please stock vegan bagels!! :)",
We would like to, but the vast majorityof bagels from major suppliers still contain trace amounts of L-cysteine as a dough conditioner.
"The brussels sprouts are always so good - please offer them more often! (cooked without oil please)"
Roasted Brussels Sprouts will be menued again next Tuesday 3/1 at Homestyle for lunch, however when we roast them, a bit of oil is required for the process. We occasionally offer steamed Brussels Sprouts.
"Are the steamed vegetables (for Sunday brunch, etc.) cooked with oil?"
If the menu sign for the vegetables says steamed they are steamed without oil. However if they are steamed with something containing oil in the same steamer. then trace amounts of oil could be transferred to the vegetables.
"What are the ingredients in the food for meatless Monday?"
Each Monday varies slightly. Look for the signs describing the dishes (the cook who makes the signage for MM was away for a few weeks; she is back now.)
"Are the marketplace bowls and plates microwave-safe?"
If you mean, will they transfer toxins to you if put in the microwave - no. However per the GET Manufacturing website, "To avoid cracking and blistering from heat, do not use melamine products in oven or microwaves." To preserve the life of the service ware we suggest that you not put the bowls and plates in the microwave.
"The dish with beets for dinner tonight was amazing!!! What was in it? Please have beet dishes more often! :)"
The ingredients were Beets, Kung Pao Sauce and Almonds. Glad you liked them!
"When it says "roasted" veggies or potatoes, are there added oils/ seasoning/ etc. in it?"
Yes, roasting includes oil and usually seasoning as well.
"The roasted potatoes at homestyle lunch was so good! Please have more mixed potato dishes!!"
Thanks for the feedback on the colorful potatoes!
"Could you make Japanese soba noodles (not stir-fry) one day? :) (with a vegan option please)"
As you noted, we use the Soba Noodles in the Monday-Wednesday Stir Fry. Do you have any suggestions for a soba recipe that is not traditionally stir-fried? Please send them along!
"Do any suppliers sell gluten free granola? Thanks!"
Yes, but not in bulk packaging (yet). We are keeping an eye out. The Bakery occasionally makes a few parfaits with GF Granola. We also order GF Berry Bowls each Monday, Wednesday and Friday and offer them from the Grab & Go.
