Weekly Highlight - Zone Diet at the Organic Bar
This week’s highlight is the Thursday Organic Bar.
The Organic Bar can be found every Thursday at the Grill, from 5-7:30, but this Thursday Chef Meesh has designed the menu around the theory of Barry Sears’ Zone Diet. The Zone Diet was developed based upon the theory that a high proportion of carbohydrates to protein can increase the levels of insulin in the blood, thereby causing the body to store more fat. According to Sears, ‘The Zone’ is the healthy hormone balance of insulin and glucagon which triggers the production of natural anti-inflammatory chemicals.
Since the anti-inflammatory chemicals are naturally produced, Sears’ says they are heart- and health-friendly, while still producing effects similar to Aspirin. Because of this, the Zone Diet can be a popular choice with athletes. However, it is worth noting that no direct studies have been done to verify Sears’ conclusions.While the Zone Diet uses a protein to carb ratio of 30:40 to produce Sears’ recommended balance, nutritionists universally recognize the importance of including vegetables, even if they add a bit of fat. This week, Chef Meesh has chosen the following menu for the Organic Bar:

Entrée: Organic Steamed Tilapia w/ an Organic Miso Sauce OR
Organic Braised Daikon w/ an Organic Miso Sauce
Starch: Organic Brown Rice
Sides: Organic Sweet and Sour Eggplant
**This menu is based around the Zone Diet theory – it isn’t an exact 30:40 ratio**
Salad Bar All Week: CA spring mix. Organic tofu, carrots, and balsamic vinaigrette. Local broccoli, tomatoes, and mushrooms.
Fruit Stand: Local oranges and apple pears.
