Roger Boesche

The Arthur G. Coons Distinguished Professor in the History of Ideas, Politics

Boesche, who taught the history of European and American political thought, passed away at home on May 23, 2017.

Education: B.A., Ph.D., Stanford University

He won the Loftsgordon Award twice, the Graham L. Sterling Memorial Award, and the Linda and Todd White Teaching Prize. He published many articles and books, including Alexis de Tocqueville: Selected Letters on Politics and Society (1985), The Strange Liberalism of Alexis de Tocqueville (1987), Theories of Tyranny: From Plato to Arendt (1996), The First Great Political Realist: Kautilya and His Arthashastra (2002), and Tocqueville's Road Map: Methodology, Liberalism, Revolution, and Despotism (2006). He served as Faculty Council President in 1990-1992.
